Dog Training – Old Dogs

There comes a time when your dog will no longer be as young as they used to be and more care and attention might be needed. Everyone and every living thing gets old at some point and there’s nothing anyone can do.

There are however, things that can help dramatically in keeping your dog young and healthy and to set them up for a much better and happier aging. Don’t wait till your dog is old before thinking of the care he will need, you need to constantly look after your dog’s health to stop any unnecessary suffering later on.

The main things that affect your dog’s later life are the diet he/she is on and the exercise they get, along with other less important needs such as grooming and others, feeding and exercise are the main factors in determining your dog’s health later in life.

So what can happen to your dog in later life I hear you ask? Well there are plenty of illnesses and situations that may occur with age because of things not working as well as they used to much the same as human illnesses. Middle age for a dog is around the seven years mark although it depends on dog size and this is when the dog’s body will gradually start to deteriate.

One of the most common of old age symptoms for dogs is hearing and sight deteriation, this can cause the dog to be much more frightened and feeling more vulnerable than they used to. Old Dog personalities may begin to change in affect to this making some more friendly and other more grumpy and snappy. Other old age side effects include putting on weight, weaker muscles and bones, memory loss and being less able to fight off infections and diseases.

Weight gain is a big issue in old dogs and needs to be monitored and acted upon often to make sure your dog doesn’t get unwanted problems through obesity.

In general, if you pet is getting old and you can see he/she is feeling the pain, then take them to the local vet to get advice on any questions you have and have them checked over by an expert.

Dog Crate Buyers Guide

When dogs used to live in the wild, they needed a bolt hole for their own protection and peach of mind.

Throughout the years even though many breeds of dogs have been domesticated, they are still den animals and have a strong natural instinct to seek out a small, cosy place to rest for shelter and security. It is a place to make your dog or puppy feel safe, something to protect its back and yet still allows it to look around. When used properly, crates are the fastest and most humane method of housebreaking dogs. Training a dog to use a crate encourages him to keep its home "clean" and never want to eliminate in its own bed. This can really aid toilet-training. How it works is that a crate acts on a dog's instinct to keep its den clean and unsoiled.

Keeping your dog in a crate teaches him to "hold it" until he can go in an appropriate place, which helps your puppy develop his bladder control. A crate also promotes happiness in your dog as it feels secure and safe in its own "home", therefore reducing behavioural problems such as excessive barking and chewing. A crate can also help break bad habits that improperly trained dogs may have developed over the years.

For older dogs, a crate functions as a "bedroom" where they can relax and escape the hustle and bustle of kids, other pets, and everyday family life.

Fabric, Metal or Plastic?

A lightweight fabric soft dog crate is suitable for crate-trained dogs. However they are not suitable for chewers, aggressive or nervous dogs. Plastic kennels are good for dogs that travel a lot and are generally the only method of containment accepted by airlines. Metal wire dog crates are ideal for home use.

They generally provide more room for the dog. They're also sturdier, so should be able to stand up to your dog's movement or activity and be able to last as your dog's permanent "home".

Whatever the make and design of the crate model, it should allow for proper ventilation and visibility, is durable and stable, has secure slide bolt latches for your dog's safety, preferably has 2 doors for ease of access, can be folded or set up quickly especially for travel purposes and are well-coated (eg zinc or hard epoxy) for easier cleaning and anti-rust.

What size?

There is no correct size of dog crate for any particular breed. It depends on the size of your dog, the nature of each individual dog, and the amount of space you feel should be sufficient to allow your dog to rest and sleep in it comfortably and safely.

Your dog should be able to stand up straight legs inside the crate, turn around, and lie down in comfort. If the crate is too big, your puppy or dog will have enough room to soil one side and sleep on the other, which defeats the purpose of the crate.

Try to get a crate roomy enough to accommodate your dog's full-grown size and get a divider panel. This way, you can keep using the same crate and have it "grow" along with your dog without upgrading the size several times.

What type of crate accessories can you get?

Toys and treats - always ensure that you have the appropriate toys and treats in the crate to keep your dog occupied and prevent your teething puppy from chewing on the crate's metal bars or plastic panels.

Crate bedding - It is also important to purchase crate bedding for warmth and a crate cover is great for reducing the number of outside distractions your dog sees, which can reduce barking and stress in the crate.

Crate pad - a crate pad is more comfortable than the crate's plastic pan.

A protection bumper - a bumper helps protect your puppy from injuries caused by chewing or leaning against the crate's metal bars. This is also suitable for highly active dogs which tend to move around a lot in the crate.

Dog Training Video

A new puppy can make a mess of your house very quickly and I soon realized that I needed a way to train my new Christmas puppy.  As things were, the puppy was getting me trained to do what she wanted me to do.  By New Years day we were out of control, and that’s when I found some online dog training video.

Think of the advantage of online dog training.  I needed help now, with online dog training videos I had access right away, I had the help I needed without waiting for a book or DVD to ship.  Suddenly new hope entered my life and instead of the little dog training me to deal with her mess I saw how to turn this around

I learned to concentrate on what the dog was doing right. Professional dog trainers everywhere tell their students to reward their dogs when they do something right. This "positive training" method is in contrast to training that centers on punishment. The dog training video recommend that owners praise and reward their dogs with treats and affection for good behavior instead of just scolding them for bad behavior.

I also learned that dog training should be fun if you do it right.  I learned that several shorter - 10 minute training sessions a day are better than a single long session.  Long sessions are what you get when you take a live class and those classes are usually once a week. I hear from friends that both you and the dog will drift in the intervening time.  Everyone has good intentions of carrying on between sessions but let’s face it, the human attention span in today's world is not that great and the week will pass before you even think about training again.  The other thing is I **** to think of having to wait for a number of weeks for a new training session to begin.  On New Year’s Day I needed help and I needed in now.  The online dog training videos were immediately available and are always there whenever they are needed.

The online video dog training is actually fun! I learned that everything you do with your dog should be fun! And the more training you do with your dog, the more fun you are going to have with your dog and you will have a happier, more confident, and better behaved dog.  Replace bad habits with good habits through reinforcement. If it annoys you that every time someone comes to visit, your dog jumps all over them, you need to find some other way for your furry friend to greet guests. Start by determining what you would like your dog to do. Maybe you would prefer that he come and site by your side when people arrive. Then work on teaching your dog to sit, and reward her heavily with praise and treats when she does. With this technique, you are teaching your dog a new habit to replace the bad behavior that you want to break by replacing the bad behavior with something that brings praise and rewards.  If you do need to correct your dog in a negative way immediately show your dog the right behavior and follow it with positive praise to keep the dog happy and wanting to work with you.  Keep it fun.

Online dog training videos are a great resource for training your dog.  The range of topics covered is complete and by experts and the videos are ready when you need them – ready on your schedule.
